General Certificate
CASLPO’s General Certificate allows a registrant to practice independently as an audiologist or speech-language pathologist in Ontario. A general certificate is held by most CASLPO registrants.
Who can apply?
Applicants with a professional master’s degree in audiology or speech-language pathology can apply for a general certificate if they:
- Have passed the Canadian Entry to Practice (CETP) Exam and either:
- Completed 750 hours of patient care or related work outside Ontario within the past three years or within three years of earning their degree in audiology or speech-language pathology, or
- Successfully completed six months of mentored practice in Ontario.
OR
- Are currently registered and in good standing in another regulated Canadian province with a certificate equivalent to CASLPO’s general certificate.
Registration Requirements
- Education – You must have a professional master’s degree in audiology or speech-language pathology which satisfies the requirements outlined in the Academic Equivalency Framework (AEF) for audiology and speech-language pathology. For more information about the AEF, click here.
- Eligibility to Work in Canada – You must be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada or authorized under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada) to engage in practice of audiology or speech-language pathology in Ontario.
- Registration Examination – You must successfully complete the Canadian Entry to Practice (CETP) Exam. For more information about the CETP Exam requirement, click here.
- Verification of Employment – You must show evidence of your recent experience practising as an audiologist or a speech-language pathologist. You must have completed at least 750 hours of patient care or related work as an audiologist or speech-language pathologist within the past three years. - Proficiency in English or French – You must demonstrate your proficiency in English or French if you did not complete your professional master’s degree in either English or French. For more information about CASLPO’s Language Proficiency Standards, click here.
- Past Offences and Findings – You must declare if you have ever been denied registration by a health regulatory body, found guilty of any offences or professional misconduct, or are currently involved in a proceeding related to your practise as an audiologist or speech-language pathologist.
- Health and Conduct – You must declare if you suffer from any physical or mental condition or disorder that could affect your ability to practise audiology or speech-language pathology in a safe manner. The College must also be satisfied that you will practise with decency, honesty and integrity, and in accordance with the law.
Maintaining Your General Certificate
- You must renew your general certificate every year by October 1. The online renewal system opens on August 1. For more information about renewal, click here.
- You must complete at least 750 hours of patient care or related work in audiology or speech-language pathology every three years. If you do not meet this requirement, you may be referred for a peer assessment.
- You must participate in CASLPO’s Quality Assurance Program (QAP), which includes the Self-Assessment Tool (SAT), Continuous Learning Activity Credits (CLACs), and Peer Assessment/Evidence Review. More information about the QAP, click here.

FAQs
1. How many hours do I need to maintain my General Certificate?
General registrants must provide 750 hours of patient care or related work in audiology or speech-language pathology over the previous three-year period.
2. What happens if I don’t meet the 750-hour requirement?
If you have not completed 750 hours of patient care or related work in audiology or speech-language pathology within the past three years, and you have held a General certificate for more than three years, the Registrar will refer you to the Quality Assurance program for a peer assessment.
3. I renewed my general registration after November 1, but now I want to change my status to Non-Practising. What do I do?
Email the Registration Team at [email protected] to request a change from General to Non-Practising registration. The Registration Team will send you an application form, which you will need to complete and submit to the College.

- There is a $150 application fee for the change.
- The General annual fee you already paid is non-refundable.
