Resigning from the College

Important Things to Know Before You Resign

Annual Fees

If you resign partway through the year, your annual fee will not be refunded.

DO NOT Let Your Registration Lapse

If you plan to resign instead of renewing for the upcoming year, please note that starting the renewal process does not mean you are renewing your registration or required to pay the renewal fee. The online renewal process also includes the option to submit a resignation. As you go through it, you'll be able to indicate that you are resigning rather than renewing.

If you let the renewal of your certificate of registration lapse without formally resigning from the College, your certificate will be suspended and then revoked. This action will stay on your record permanently.

Insurance Coverage

CASLPO recommends that former registrants maintain professional liability insurance even after resigning. Individuals can still be held accountable for their conduct while practising audiology or speech-language pathology, even after they have left the profession. This type of ongoing protection is often called “tail coverage” or “extended reporting coverage.”

Complaints or legal claims related to past practice may surface months or even years after someone has stopped practising. Maintaining liability insurance helps ensure that legal costs and potential damages are covered if a former registrant is named in a complaint, investigation, or lawsuit related to their previous work. Keeping this coverage in place provides an added layer of protection in case of a delayed or retrospective claim.

Your Responsibilities When Closing Your Practice

Before you stop practicing, you must:

  • Inform your clients: Let your patients know about your plans to close your practice.
  • Arrange care: Help your patients find another provider or give them enough time to make their own arrangements.
  • Manage client records: Transfer records to your patient, a successor, another qualified registrant, or ensure they are stored securely. Patients must be informed about where their records are kept and how to access them.

After you resign, you will no longer have access to your current or past Self-Assessment Tools (SAT). If there is any information you want to keep (e.g., learning goals or Continuous Learning Activity Credits), log in to your SAT to capture it.

If you have a private practice, we recommend reviewing the document “Tips for Private Practice” for guidance on how to properly close your practice.

How to Resign

If you are no longer practising as an audiologist or speech-language pathologist in Ontario and want to resign from the College, you have two options:

It is important to note that resignations are not accepted over the phone.

Option 1: Resign in writing
  • Send an email to the College stating that you wish to resign.
  • Include the reason and the effective date of your resignation in the email.
Option 2: Resigning online during the renewal period (August 1 to October 1)
  • Log into CASLPO’s Registrant Portal and click the Renew link.
  • In the drop-down menu under “Do you wish to change your status…,” select Yes, I wish to change my status…
  • Choose Resigned as your new status.
  • Select your reason for resigning from the drop-down list.
  • Click Continue renewal as Resigned
  • Complete the required sections, including Contact Information and the Declaration

After You Resign

Investigations and Complaints

Resigning does not prevent a complaint against you or an investigation into your conduct. The College retains jurisdiction over all registrants for the period they were registered. If a complaint about your professional conduct arises from when you were a registrant, the College can still investigate. There is no time limit for complaints or investigations.

Returning to Practice

If you decide to return to practice in Ontario, you will need to reapply for a general certificate of registration. This means meeting the current registration standards, which may have changed since you last registered. For example:

  • To be eligible for registration, all applicants must hold a professional master’s degree in audiology or speech-language pathology. If you have only a bachelor’s degree or a post-graduate diploma, you may no longer meet the current registration requirements.
  • Applicants who are not currently registered with another audiology or speech-language pathology regulatory body in Canada must pass the Canadian Entry to Practice (CETP) Exam to qualify for general registration with CASLPO.
Accessing Your Old Registration Documents

If you need a copy of your registration file, you can request it for a fee:

  • $50 covers up to the first 25 pages
  • $1 for each additional page
