Recognizing Speech and Hearing Month

May is Speech and Hearing Month, a time to raise awareness about communication health and the important role of speech-language pathologists and audiologists.

This year’s theme, Access Changes Everything, highlights how essential timely access to communication health services is across the lifespan. When people can access these services early and when they need them, they are more likely to experience stronger health outcomes, improved communication skills, and greater participation in school, work, and community life.

When access is limited, the impact can be significant. Communication challenges may go unaddressed, leading to barriers in learning, social connection, mental health, and daily functioning. These challenges affect not only individuals, but also families and communities.

Speech-language pathologists and audiologists support people at every stage of life, from helping children develop early communication skills to supporting adults with hearing loss, swallowing disorders, sense of balance, and communication changes related to injury, illness, or aging.
